What to Do During a Hurricane Threat
If a hurricane is threatening, there are a number of safety tips that should be followed.

- Hurricane Watch: Hurricane conditions are possible within 36 hours. This is the time to prepare: Install shutters, get out your supply kit, pull out your generator, gas up your car and approved gas cans, etc.
- Hurricane Warning: Hurricane conditions are expected within 24 hours. At this time, your preparations should be complete.
- Stay indoors and stay tuned to radio and television.
- Get together with family members to talk about what needs to be done. Make sure everyone knows where to meet and who to call, in case you are separated from one another. Consider the needs of relatives and neighbors with special needs.
- Secure your home and close storm shutters. Secure outdoor objects or bring them indoors. Moor your boat if time permits.Gather several days supply of water and food for each family member. Water systems may become contaminated or damaged. Sterilize and fill the bathtub to ensure a supply of safe water.
- Make arrangements for pets ahead of time. Pets are not allowed into public shelters for health reasons. Contact your local humane society for information on Broward County’s pet-friendly shelter.
- Prepare supplies and a car kit in case of evacuation. Fuel your car in advance in case service stations may be closed during and after the storm. Review the evacuation routes. If instructed, turn off utilities at the main valves.
- Evacuate to an inland location, if:
- You live in an evacuation zone and local authorities announce an evacuation.
- You live in a mobile home or temporary structure; they are particularly hazardous during hurricanes.
- You live on the coast, on a flood plain near a river or inland waterway.
- You feel you are in danger.
- When authorities order an evacuation:
- Leave immediately to avoid being marooned by flooded roads and fallen trees.
- Follow evacuation routes announced by local officials via radio and television broadcasts.
- Stay away from coastal areas, canal banks and rivers until potential flooding is past.
- Tell others where you are going.
- If you are not required to evacuate, stay indoors during the hurricane and away from windows. Do not be fooled if there is a lull, it could be the eye of the storm, which is usually followed by winds picking up again. Listen to the radio or television for information.
- Avoid using the telephone except for serious emergencies. Local authorities need first priority on telephone lines.
