While recycling in the City of Plantation is not mandatory, the City strongly encourages residents to recycle any and all recyclable materials. Recycling reduces the amount of solid waste placed in the regular blue trash bags and thus lowers the overall cost of residential solid waste services. In order to recycle, the City of Plantation requires all non-multifamily residents, single-family homes, townhouses, duplexes and triplexes (other than those located in Plantation Acres or Melaleuca Isles) to use Plantation’s clear recycling bags for their solid waste recycling.

Collection services are provided one time per week, beginning at 7:00am and normally ending by 7:00pm, with no services on Sunday or Christmas. Place your recycling into a clear recycling bag curbside, on your designated day for pickup.

Recycling Guidelines

Effective October 1, 2009, the City of Plantation, along with most of Broward County, has adopted the “single stream” system for recycling. This means that ALL recyclable items may be commingled into one clear recycle bag (as opposed to the previous “dual stream system,” whereby residents had to separate recyclable paper from other recyclable material).

The following items may all be mixed into one recycle bag. Please remove all caps and rinse containers before placing into the clear recycling bag or multifamily container. If caps are not removed, waste is considered contaminated and cannot be recycled.

  • All clear and colored glass except for blue. For broken glass, please wrap the glass in newspaper and then place it in the bag.
  • All food cans including tin, steel and aluminum.
  • All plastics numbers 1 through 7.
  • Newspapers, magazines, catalogs, phone books, office paper, junk mail and chipboard (cereal boxes).
  • Multi-family residents may use container designated specifically for newspapers and newspaper inserts located on site.
  • Cardboard must be flattened down and tied into a bundle not to exceed 18” by 24”.
  • Accepted recycling materials
